About half our business has always been theatre shoots where actors, dancers, parents of children can order DVDs.  One for $30, & $20 for each additional.

I'm not sure if blu-Ray will ever become a standard like the DVd although the bang for your buck with playststion with netflix streaming has got one sitting in my house.

With the rough economy we have begun to see parents scheming and getting together to take advantage of our 2 for $50 offer by pairing up.  I'm sure some have copied them.

If in 10 years the main option is to hand over an SD card, I think there is a good chance this way of charging may be over.

The idea was to offer video to schools/dance studios at no cost to the school

thoughts?

The truth is that I believe blu Ray will be around for 15 years or so but we do like to foresee these events.

Cheers and sorry for the rough post, iPhone inthe spa California stye!

I think I'd have to implement my physical style of copy protection for that type of distribution.

Create a black video mpeg that extends to the edge of the disc (max output).  Then scribe an arc about an inch or two along the outer edge (where you can see the edge of the burn), using a sharp tool and one of those plastic end things they use when packaging bulk discs.

Be sure you do not set that black mpeg to play!

If you follow those instructions, the discs will play in all players, but will not copy.  In order to copy, they have to lift just the good mpegs off the disc and make a new disc - beyond the capabilities of most.

I'm a little surprised that anyone is still making money from projects based on disc sales, but apparently there are enough honest people left to make that feasible - depending on the audience.

Blu-ray is the current HD movie delivery standard and won't be going away any time soon, so enough of that nonsense.

We sell a few Blu Rays but it seems to be just at the very beginning of it's infancy in Santa Cruz although the recession did not help.

Again, I remember that the year my orders tilted from VHS to DVD (just a few years ago) was the year that DVD players went below $50.  I anticipate the same for Blu Ray.

Currently we charge $45 for Blu Ray and $30 for DVD.  Out of 35 orders we might get 2 for Blu Ray but these are "progressive" type people.  I have noted that the more educated people are, the more frugal they often are.

I think eventually Blu Ray will be the norm but if we can't charge more for them there is no benefit to us as our duplicators will not run them, they take much longer to burn, etc., etc.

The pay per disk business is fantastic because there is little editing compared to the 20-40 total production hours one might put into wedding.  Margins are waaaaayyy better.

Cheers,

Todd
